Avengers: Endgame Passes Avatar As Second-Highest Grossing Film At Domestic Box Office

Avengers: Endgame has officially passed Avatar to become the second-highest grossing film EVER at the domestic box office, having raked in a whopping $780 million since its release last month.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office, having made $936.6m.

In a press release issued when Endgame had the first $1 billion global opening in box office historyAlan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, gushed in a press release: “Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre both in terms of storytelling and at the box office.”

Horn added: “Though Endgame is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world.”

Endgame was probably the most highly-anticipated movie of recent times – the culmination of 22 movies and 11 long years – and it lived up to the hype, because the film hasn’t just been a a whopping financial success; the movie has been wildly popular with fans and critics alike, with some hailing it as the ‘best film ever’.

During its opening weekend, the film accounted for more than four out of every five tickets sold in US cinemas.

Endgame‘s opening weekend box office figures were also boosted thanks to the $329 million (£254m) it made in China, unlike the series’ previous movie, Avengers: Infinity War, which was only released in the country two weeks after it had landed elsewhere.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, meanwhile, is currently enjoying a bit of box office glory of its own, having just dethroned the latest Avengers flick with its $57m opening weekend.

Avengers: Endgame had taken just over $29m in that same time frame (although, yes, since its release it’s made billions), while Pokemon: Detective Pikachu has taken $24m, meaning that the third installment of the neo-noir Keanu Reeves franchise has taken the top spot.
