Fat-shamed policeman thanks ‘mean tweet’ for free surgery

Fat-shamed policeman thanks 'mean tweet' for free surgeryA popular Indian writer’s tweet, fat-shaming a policeman, has brought a completely unexpected outcome, a free weight-reduction surgery for a policeman in Mumbai.

Inspector Daulatram Jogawat left the hospital on Monday, and highly thanked writer Shobhaa De for making him famous.

Last month the writer tweeted an image of Mr Jogawat, claiming that the police in Mumbai planned “heavy security” for the upcoming local elections.

The viral tweet opened a window of light for Mr Jogawat that led to Saifee Hospital; a free treatment to relieve him from this shame and unwanted fat.

The hospital authority said that Mr Jogawat was now doing well after the surgery, and could lose up to 80kg (176lb) by 2018. He weighed 180kg before the operation.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is used as the last possible treatment for over-weight people who are in danger with regards to their obesity (having a body mass index of 40 or above or 35 plus other obesity-related health conditions).

Sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass is when some part of the stomach is removed or the digestive system is re-routed over most part of the stomach.

Mr Jogawat told the Indian national newspaper that he got “the opportunity to come all the way to Mumbai for treatment” just because of De’s tweet.

Inspector Daulatram Jogawat said he put on weight because of medical complications

He further said that he began gaining weight due to medical complications and not because of his over excessive diet.

“Honestly speaking, my weight never came in between my duty because I was physically active and had the brains to solve crimes. I was fairly rewarded for my work,” Mr Jogawat said.

However, De later defended her tweet, claiming that she had no intentions of offending anyone.
