Here’s what really happens when your “Hair Hurts”…

All the ladies out there must have gone through the irritating discomfort you feel when you take your hair out of an updo after a long day at work or just feel your head being pulling away. But, have you ever considered why your hair feel sore awkwardly sore? Turns out that there is an entire science going due to which your hair hurts!

World-class dermatologist Dr. Angela Lamb has stated that it is not your entire mane but the nerve endings attached to hair that hurt.

“Hair follicles are some of the first receptors of feeling. Your hair is a whole component of your nervous system, so when you pull it up that puts pressure on the nerve endings that are at the root of the follicle. When you do that over time, they get sore.”

But, don’t ignore this as a case of just fed-up muscles. Pulling your hair up repeatedly can put you at risk of traction alopecia: Hair loss literally just from putting up, stress and tension on the hair; quotes Lamb. It means that continuing this process again and again can lead to thinning and hair loss.

“Hair is dead, it’s just made of Keratin, but certainly if you put too much tension and pressure on it that can cause breakage,” Lamb said. Therefore, try to make different hairstyles and updo to prevent losing your hair in mass numbers.

Lamb warns that “braids are one of the main culprits of traction alopecia”. Her advice for women who have their hair braided? “Make sure they are loose and not pulling on the hair too much or too tight.”

So if you want your hair to look as shiny and healthy as you want, stop pulling them off of your head so miserably.
