Must watch Netflix and Prime Comedy series

By: Marium Husnain

During this lockdown, where all of us found different activities for ourselves from cooking to painting, cycling to running, gardening to crafting just to keep ourselves engaged. We tried to explore everything unique, and so did I. during this pandemic there was a depression in the air so just to kill it I watched some comedy series, and here are some of my favorites.

1. FLEABAG

Amazon prime show “Fleabag” is about a woman named Fleabag who runs a café and is dealing with her best friend’s death. The series is written and produced by the lead actress, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, writer of Killing Eve. What I liked about this show is Fleabag’s witty character as she talks to the audience by literally looking into the camera. This made me connect to her character as I know exactly what she’s feeling about any situation. Fleabag is reluctant to love and only expect bad from everyone around her. This mini-series ended with 2 seasons released in December, 2019.

2. THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL

This Amazon Prime show is directed and written by Amy Sherman-Palladino maker of “Gilmore Girls.” The story is set in the late 1950’s and revolves around a beautiful and happy housewife, “Mrs. Maisel.” Living in New York, Upper West-side with a loving husband and two-children, she has a perfect life but after her husband left her, Midge discovers her hidden talent; stand-up comedy. This changes her life completely. She faces new hurdles every day as a woman in such a business, but works hard for her passion. We see her journey from a perfect house-wife to a struggling stand-up comedian. What I love about this show apart from the great storyline is its colorful set design and attractive costumes. Season 4 is supposed to release at the start of 2021.

3. RUSSIAN DOLL

Russian Doll is a series about a woman Nadia, who left her 36th birthday party to find her missing cat on the streets, but got hit by a car and died. She wakes up again in a washroom and dies again. She keeps dying and restarting her life in a loop which confuses her. With outstanding performance and storyline, Nadia’s character is extremely funny and badass. The show ended with a cliffhanger and is all set to release its season 2 next year.

4. THE GLOW

This Netflix series set in the 1980s is about a struggling actress ‘Ruth’ who went for an audition for an unnamed project, but later it turned out to be an audition for a reality show of wrestling women. Ruth takes the opportunity, and the story revolves around her journey in the show. The concept of this series is unique and engaging. It’s season 4 which will be released in 2021.

All these comedy series have female leads who are different and unique in their own way. They fight their insecurities and are flawed like all of us. They work hard for their passion, no matter what. Each series ends with a great message, and there’s a huge character arc by the end of each season. I had a great time watching these series.
