I hereby bring the Bad news to the fans of Game of Thrones; it looks like the rumors are true. GOT is left with 13 more episodes.
The showrunners of GOT David Benioff and Dan Weiss had previously coded that the show would wrap up after two more seasons. In an interview, Benioff revealed that the show would total out at 73 hours, 60 of which have already passed with the airing of the season six finale on Sunday which leave us with just 13, implying that those rumours of seven episodes in 2017 and a mere six in 2018 were on the money.
“It’s two more seasons we’re talking about,” he said. “From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now.”
It’s not just trying not to outstay your welcome,” Benioff explained. “We’re trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end.
The showrunners have a “cohesive story” in mind, with a beginning, middle and an end. “We’ve known the end for quite some time and we’re hurtling towards it,” he said. “Daenerys is finally coming back to Westeros, Jon Snow is king of the North, Cersei is sitting on the Iron Throne and we know the Night King is up there, waiting for all of them. The pieces are on the board now. Some of the pieces have been removed from the board and we are heading toward the end game.”
Former HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said earlier this year that he hopes the showrunners will be certain to continue Game of Thrones for longer. “Where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them,” he said. “As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do. I’m always an optimist and I do believe we will figure this out.”
It seems that the two showrunners are sticking true to their promise of letting the story come to its natural conclusion, rather than forcing the series past its planned ending for the sake of productivity. But at the same time I’m actually sad that GOT is going to end soon. We all were just so addicted to this series, the moment we see the first episode of the season of GOT we just couldn’t wait to see the next episode of it. We are so attached to the story that we actually believe that we’re part of this show. While knowing that it’s ending soon, I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life, LOL.
Game of Thrones will return to HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2017.
