*** WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR EPISODE FIVE OF THE FINAL SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES ***
Here we go then, we’ve done eight seasons and more than a decade but Game of Thrones will finally reach a conclusion next week.
So, where are we at? Well, you can have a look at the trailer for the final episode here if you like, although it keeps its cards pretty damn close to its chest.
One thing is for certain, Daenerys Targaryen still has a huge role to play. After all, it was her who heard the bells of King’s Landing toll in surrender but decided to go nuclear all over the capital regardless, raining down dragonfire from the skies.
As it happens, that has a lot of fans of the show pretty angry. Sure, we were ready for this heel turn into the Mad Queen, but it doesn’t really fit with the rest of her narrative arc when you think about it.
OK, so House Targaryen’s words are ‘Fire and Blood’ but that hasn’t really been borne out across the time we’ve got to know Dany.
Quite the opposite. She’s freed slaves, birthed dragons, and ruled with kindness to date.
Hell, after her dragons killed one kid she locked them up under the Great Pyramid of Meereen. That doesn’t sound like the actions of a heartless and ruthless tyrant, does it? So, why the sharp about-face?
In the space of such a short amount of time, she’s gone from being the good, just and rightful ruler of the Seven Kingdoms to a woman who is willing to barbecue entire swathes of innocent people for pretty much no reason other than that she was wound up.
Well, one thing is for sure, we’ll find out next week what her fate really holds.
