Afghan-Canadian filmmaker Brishkay Ahmed whose previous film was story of Burqa: Case of a Confused Afghan is now shining light on a certain type of men in order to improve the rights of Pakistani women.
Ahmed’s film is one of nine features filling out the 12th Vancouver International Women in Film Festival. The festival opens on International Women’s Day with Iranian director/writer Narges Abyar’s latest movie Breath.
The heart of Ahmed’s film is the ongoing world of tribal traditions and millennia-old justice that allows criminals to hide behind ancient religious traditions.
“They (village leaders and most men) don’t listen to women, so a goal with this film was to show men standing up,” said Ahmed.
“It’s a very corrupt culture. It has nothing to do with faith.”
