Game of Thrones creators ditch HBO for Netflix in big-money deal

Game of Thrones show runners David Benioff and DB Weiss seemingly have an insurmountable challenge in topping one of the world’s most successful TV series, but if they’re going to do it, it could be through the medium of streaming.

The pair has signed a major deal with Netflix to write, produce and direct a number of epic new movies and TV shows, Deadline has confirmed.

Back in May, when Benioff and Weiss were wrapping up the highly divisive final season of Thrones, it was revealed that the duo had been in talks with Netflix, HBO/WarnerMedia, Disney, Comcast, Amazon and Apple. Then, last month, it was narrowed down to just Netflix, Amazon and Disney.

But ultimately it was Netflix who won the battle for the pair’s signatures.

Confirming the deal, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement: “We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix.

“They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

Benioff and Weiss said: “We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home.

“Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber.

“We remember the same shots from the same ’80s movies, we love the same books and we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”
