On Friday night, Madonna was honoured as Woman of the Year at the Billboard Women in Music 2016. It is indeed an achievement for Madonna to receive this award as she is still the highest-grossing female touring artist of all time. As she came on stage to receive her award, she had her speech ready which was brutally honest.
In her speech, she bluntly talked about sexism, ageism and misogyny in the music industry. She said, “You will be criticized, you will be vilified, and you will definitely not be played on the radio,”
She also gave a message to younger women in the audience regarding their careers which will change as they age. She said “People say that I’m so controversial, but I think the most controversial thing that I’ve done is to stick around.”
