While 2016 ends with a lot of griefs and sorrows in the form of disasters, calamities and losing the loved personalities; Pakistani cinema is one thing that has definitely left us extremely proud in terms of entertainment growth and sector prosperity.

A total of about 27 films were released this year, marking a start of a really prosperous cinematic journey. However, it is obvious that not all the releases fared well on the big screen. While some received all the love and appreciation, some movies were even criticized for being a rip-off of Bollywood.

So, we bring you top 10 grossers of Pakistani cinema this year, in terms of longest running time and box office collection:

1- ACTOR IN LAW:

Actor in law is a hilarious yet inspiring journey of a wannabe actor who turns into a mischievous lawyer with time. Undoubtedly, this film rightfully deserves the first spot in this list.

2- HO MANN JAHAAN:

The first-time director Asim Raza with Yasir Hussain as a dialogue writer bagged in Mahira Khan, Adeel Hussain, Shehryaar Munawar and Sonia Jahan in the leading roles. Releasing under the ‘Dubsmash’ fad regime, Ho Mann Jahaan took us all on the lovely ride of being teens. After watching this film, you won’t mind saying that you only get to live your life once. So, live it to the fullest.

3- LAHORE SE AAGEY:

A sequel to 2015’s Karachi se Lahore, Lahore se Aagy stars Saba Qamar and Yasir Hussain in lead roles and is directed by Wajahat Rauf. The road comedy revolves around the love story of Moti (Yasir Hussain) with the rockstar (Saba Qamar) on the scenic locations, throughout Pakistan.

Box office collections: Rs 176 million

4- JANAAN:

Written by pro-TV actor Osman Khalid Butt and directed by Azfar Jafri, the film stars Armeena Rana Khan, Bilal Ashraf & Ali Rehman Khan in leading roles. The movie groped in the likes of Bollywood’s music industry like Armaan Malik, taking a weight over the other productions.

Box office collections: Rs 175 million

5- BACHAANA:

A romantic thriller set around the beautiful plains of Mauritius, Bachaana takes you to the comedy journey of a narcotic dealer’s (Adeel Hussain) wife (Sanam Saeed) running for safety, with the help of a cab driver (Mohib Mirza). The movie undoubtedly was a cute love story, we usually crave for.

6- MAALIK:

Maalik by Ashir Azeem was the first Pakistani film ever to be slapped with a ban on the prejudice of authorities. It had a vast yet strong cast including; Hassan Niazi, Ashir Azeem, Sajid Hasan, Adnan Shah Tipu, Farhan Ally Agha, Tatmain ul Qulb, Ehteshamuddin, Shakeel Hussain Khan, and Rashid Farooqui. The movie strongly opposes the political culture and staunchly explores the after effects of Soviet War in Afghanistan.

7- DOBARA PHIR SE:

From lavish New York to upscale Connecticut, Dobara Phir Se revolves around the story of  Ali Kazmi, Sanam Saeed, Hareem Farooq, Adeel Hussain,  and Tooba Siddiqui; tied in the web of relationship dilemmas. The movie had high expectations from the audience, and it managed to fulfill all of them to some extent.

8- ZINDAGI KITNI HASEEN HAY:

Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay, starring the real life couple Feroze Khan and Sajal Aly, revolves around the problems and emotional crest of married life. Directed by Anjum Shahzad, the movie is a telltale of real life happenings.

9- 3 BAHADUR: THE REVENGE OF BABA BALAAM:

10- MAH-E-MIR:

Top ten highest grossing Pakistani films of 2016

Mah-e-Mir, produced in collaboration with Anjum Shahzad and Sarmad Sehbai, honoured the life of classic poet Mir Taqi Mir and his honest declarations of love. With the names like Fahad Mustafa, Iman Ali, Alyy Khan, Sanam Saeed, Manzar Sehbai in the cast; this movie satisfied our long-lost craving for classical cinematic exposure. Fahad Mustafa definitely outdoes all the other actors with his flawless acting.

Box office collections: Rs 22.5 million
