Women need more sleep than men as their brains are more complex – Study

Women need more sleep than men as their brains are more complex and difficult, a research has indicated. As per the research, getting a good night’s sleep is helpful for the brain health of women while for men shorter naps are of more benefits.

Researchers and scientists at the Max Planck Institute in Munich surveyed the sleeping pattern of more than 160 adults. The cohort’s sleep patterns were monitored alongside various intelligence tests to analyze the reasoning and problem solving skills of those involved with the experiment.

They monitored sleep spindles, which are basically the bursts of brain activity, in relation with different sleep patterns in reference to different genders.

The scientists discovered that sleep spindles, an indicator of higher IQ scores, boosted when women entered dreamless sleep. On the other hand, men’s brain activity had the same stimulation when they took naps.

Professor Martin Dresler said:

“Our results demonstrate that the association between sleep spindles and intelligence is more complex than we have assumed until now.

“There are many factors involved in intellectual abilities, and sleep is just one of them. This large study of men and women gives us a more accurate framework for the next phase of research which will involve differences in individuals sleep patterns.”

Professor Jim Horne, another lead researcher, suggested that:

“Women tend to multi-task — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater.”
