Netflix making Vikings sequel TV series

Netflix is once again rescuing a TV series that’s winding down on conventional networks — albeit not in the way you might expect. The service has unveiled Vikings: Valhalla, a spiritual sequel to Vikings that will come from series mastermind Michael Hirst. Don’t expect to see any of the familiar characters — it’s set 100 years after the end of the History series and focuses on legends from the tail end of the Viking era, including Leif Erikson, Harald of Norway and even William the Conqueror. It’ll focus on an “ever changing and evolving Europe,” presumably including the rise of Christendom.

Vikings tells the story of Ragnar Lothbrok, the legendary Norse Viking hero. He began life as a farmer, but rose in status after successful raids into England, eventually becoming king of his people. The show follows his life and that of his family, through the ups and downs of violent Scandinavian life in the 8th and 9th century CE. The show first premiered in 2013, and stars Gustaf Skarsgård, Katheryn Winnick, Alexander Ludwig, Travis Fimmel, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. In 2016, the show spawned a comic series based on the show.

The series will tap fellow Vikings alumni Morgan O’Sullivan as an executive producer alongside Die Hard’s Jeb Stuart. There’s no mentioned release schedule or casting.
