What are the benefits of chia seeds?

Ever heard of the plant Salvia hispanica? It belongs to the mint family and produces a superfood that have been making waves across the world, especially in the health and wellness industry. It’s small yet powerful, black in colour and can absorb 10 times the amount of water compared to its size. CHIA SEEDS! The benefits of chia seeds are endless and not a secret. The Aztecs and Mayans have been incorporating it in their diets for thousands of years but it has recently come under the spotlight and recognised as a superfood by health and wellness experts, who swear by the benefits of chia seeds.

The word chia itself means ‘strength’ and has been appreciated for its ability to provide instant energy and keeps the body in balance. These tiny seeds may fool you when you look at them, but I can assure you, they are a power packed addition to your lifestyle!

Unique characteristics that make chia seeds a superfood!

Let’s talk about the benefits of chia seeds and see what is that oomph factor. What is it that drives people to invest in these little seeds and are they really that beneficial for our health?

Contains High Antioxidants

Antioxidants are very important for the human body and they prevent slow damage to the cells which is a natural reaction to the environment, pollution as well as various other reasons that may stress our body. The best part? The antioxidants in Chia seeds are purely natural.

High Quality Protein

With a great balance of amino acids, chia seeds contain a decent amount of protein that is 14% higher if compared to other plant-based proteins.

Lower Risk of Heart Disease

The risk of heart disease can be a challenging aspect to deal with. Chia seeds however, support good heart health and may lower blood pressure. However, it is important to follow a well balanced dietary lifestyle rather than just depending on supplements.

Carb Count is Composed of Fibre

Any form of carbohydrates that are present in Chia seeds are purely fibre. The positive element of chia seed consumption is that it will not raise your blood sugars or cause insulin resistance as the carbs are composed entirely of fibre which is quite beneficial for your metabolism. This not only increases fullness and automatically help you eat fewer calories but also slows down the absorption of food. Fibre is also essential when keeping your gut health in mind.

Aids in Weight Loss

This speaks for itself. Due to the slower absorption, chia seeds are quite the magician when it comes to weight loss. The bonus? Also aids in hydration!

Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Although it is recommended to obtain your source of omega-3 from fish or fish oil, chia seeds can be a great addition to the overall contribution.

Support Bone Health

Several nutrients that are vital for healthy bones can be found in Chia seeds. These include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and protein. For people who do not consume dairy or are lactose intolerant, chia seeds contain high amounts of calcium which can be an excellent alternative for them.

Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Many of us who are suffering with type 2 diabetes can incorporate chia seeds in their diet and lower their overall blood sugar levels. High fasting sugar can lead to severe risk of heart diseases and consuming chia seeds in moderation can be beneficial.

Anti-Inflammatory

The body responds to infection or bacteria by swelling up and causing us to flare up. Chronic inflammation increases risks of cancers, heart diseases and other health problems. Certain superfoods such as chia seeds reduce the blood levels that can be found in inflammatory markers.

High Nutrients Low Calories

What could be better than a superfood that is loaded with nutrients and has minimal calories. Who knew a tiny black seed could have such positive characteristics?

Are chia seeds really worth the hype?

To conclude my article, let’s just say Chia seeds can be an amazing addition to your daily lifestyle. Incorporate it in your drinks, smoothies, porridge, fruit salads and yoghurt bowls. A simple way I love to enjoy chia seeds is with a bowl of dairy free yoghurt, a tablespoon of chia seeds, fresh strawberries, peanut butter, or dark chocolate shavings. It is a delicious, quick and healthy snack which is also visually pleasing! I mean who doesn’t want instagrammable food?
