Toxicity: Identification and elimination.

We all have been in a situation where we may have been surrounded by people that are not good for our overall mental health; be it a friend, lover, partner or family member. It can prove to be quite daunting and draining for us. Such people usually tend to take a toll on our well being and can impact our day to day life by projecting their negative energy on us and making us feel invalidated.

For many of us, it can be challenging to identify what serves us well and what doesn’t. Just because you are around someone whose behaviour is toxic does not mean you have to be a part of their emotional chaos. Conditioning comes into play in such situations where we are taught or raised to believe a certain thing and hence hesitate in implementing what’s beneficial for us in real life.

“People inspire you, or they drain you — pick them wisely.” – Hans F. Hansen

This quote is the most accurate representation of how toxic people make you feel. They can be quite consuming of our energy and directly affect our mood which eventually leads to a burn out and lack of focus.

It’s all about making the right choice and being around those that support your growth rather than stunt it! Dealing with such individuals can be quite draining, hence, it is essential to recognize the red flags and distance yourself from the situation before it harms your mental health.

Signs of toxic people:

  1. Manipulative/Selfish
  2. No accountability of their actions
  3. No sense of responsibility
  4. Judgmental
  5. Victim Mentality
  6. Have no respect for boundaries
  7. Inconsistent
  8. Push you to prove yourself for them
  9. Not concerned or caring plus do not regard what’s important to you
  10. Do not apologise

Whenever you observe such traits in an individual, try to avoid the situation and separate your path. Even though you may make countless efforts to help them and make them considering changing, it usually ends up in a cycle which truly sucks the energy out of you with no results whatsoever.

Instead of wasting your energy on such things, it’s better to invest the same effort in improving our day to day lives and working towards our own goals and aspirations.

Remember, no one is worth your mental peace and if someone challenges that, you know it’s time to say ‘Toodles, show’s over’!
